REAR EXTENSION FOR A LONDON TOWNHOUSE

Case Study #43

Nestled in North London, this townhouse has undergone a huge transformation. We designed a multi structure extension that would complement the renovation and provide greater functionality and connection to the garden.

Case study before picture

The brief was to design and install a rear extension that would expand the kitchen and dining room areas. Our client wanted to enhance the rear of the property during their renovation – it had multiple levels that were not practical for everyday living.

The first element of the extension was a traditional lean-to, predominantly glazed, with a strong emphasis on light and openness. This space was to include full-width bi-folding doors, opening directly onto the raised terrace and creating a seamless transition between the interior and exterior. The second structure, a classical style orangery, would house a more formal dining area beneath a beautifully proportioned roof lantern. French doors would open onto the same terrace, creating a natural flow throughout the rear of the property.

The project would consist of two distinct, traditional glazed structures, each serving a unique purpose whilst having a combined aesthetic and materiality.

The orangery is characterised by its traditional entablature, pilasters, and decorative cornicing. The central roof lantern brings in an abundance of natural light while also acting as a striking focal point over the dining space below. Internally, the finish is understated but rich in detail, with panelled reveals and finely moulded joinery.

Both elements of the extension were designed with great care to ensure they felt like a natural continuation of the original architecture.

The lean-to structure features elegant timber glazing bars and a low-pitched roofline, allowing maximum daylight to flood the adjoining kitchen space. Its bi-folding doors open effortlessly onto the terrace, providing an ideal connection to the garden during the warmer months.

This extension now forms an integral part of the home, creating a space that not only improves the practicality of the property, but also enhances the overall appearance.
