A refined, light-filled space designed for year-round comfort and classical architectural balance.
Our clients sought to replace an old deteriorating single glazed structure that had become draughty, prone to leaks, and difficult to regulate in temperature. Poor insulation and inefficient glass made it difficult to heat in the winter, and lack of built in ventilation made it too hot in the summer.
Their aim was to create a room that offered all day functionality, throughout the year, and a strong visual connection with the garden.
The design process began with a concept based on an increased footprint so the new orangery could be accessed from all garden facing rooms on the ground floor.
One of the defining elements of the project is its use of contrasting colours. These tones emphasise the clarity of the architectural lines and create a visually engaging environment that shifts beautifully between day and evening. Inside, the interplay of light, structure and colour forms an inviting room suited to both relaxation and entertaining.
The orangery is designed to immerse the occupants in the surrounding landscape, allowing them to enjoy nature from the comfort of a warm, sheltered environment.
The generous glazing and large 5-leaf folding doors open the room directly to the garden, making the space feel connected and alive throughout the seasons.
Even on cooler days, the room offers panoramic views and a sense of tranquillity, reinforcing the orangery’s role as a bridge between home and nature.
To enhance the versatility of the space, a logburner and flue was designed within the orangery. This feature creates a cosy focal point, ensuring that the room remains inviting even during the coldest months. Combined with efficient insulation and modern glazing, the fireplace transforms the orangery into a truly all-year-round living area.
Lighting plays a vital role in shaping the orangery’s atmosphere. A combination of pendant lights suspended from inverted ceiling bosses, and subtle lighting positioned on the internal classical columns, provides layered illumination that adapts effortlessly to day or night. As dusk falls, the ambient lighting highlights the architectural detailing.
The completed orangery showcases refined classical detailing, with internal and external columns lending the structure rhythm and permanence.
The new extension makes a confident architectural statement while remaining harmonious with the existing home.
